The team

The crew behind RRR

A student-run team drawn from mechanical, electrical, software and computer engineering, and beyond.

Leadership

Executive team

Running a vehicle program means budgets, schedules and sponsors as much as welds and CAD.

The subteams

The subteam leads. Everyone else, with profiles, is on the full roster.

Subteam 01

Chassis

The chassis is the frame and roll cage that every other system mounts to, and the structure that protects the driver. Members lay out the frame and cockpit around the rules and the driver, check it for strength and stiffness, and plan where everything else bolts on, then build it, test it and look after it at competition. You learn structures, and how the safety rules shape a design.

Suspension

Suspension decides how the car handles rough ground and how much punishment it can take. Members choose the geometry, work out spring and damper settings, and analyze the loads before anything is built. Once the car is running they test it, measure how it rides and handles, and tune it for the course. You learn vehicle dynamics, and how to turn test results into design changes.

Drivetrain

Drivetrain gets power from the engine to the wheels. Every team runs the same engine, so the gains come from the CVT, the gearbox and the gearing between it and the ground. Members design and analyze those parts, then test them for efficiency and reliability, because the car has to last a four-hour endurance race.

Electrical

Electrical covers everything on the car that runs on wires: the harness, the kill switches that shut the car down, and the sensors and data logging that show how it's performing. Members design, build and test the harness and safety systems; the sensors and data logging are still a work in progress. You learn to build wiring that holds up to mud and vibration.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing turns the other subteams' designs into real parts. Members plan how each part will be made, then machine, weld and fabricate it in the shop, and work with the designers on what can realistically be built. You get hands-on shop skills that few classes offer, and a feel for what makes a design practical to make.

Administration

Administration keeps the team funded, supplied and on the road. Members find and look after sponsors, track the budget and purchasing, run marketing and events, and plan travel to competitions. They also prepare the cost report and sales presentation, which are judged at competition alongside the car. You get real sponsor relationships and practice pitching to industry judges.
